The inaugural Anglo American Padel Cup gets underway tomorrow (October 10th) at The Padel Hub North London with opera singer Alexander Wall kicking off proceedings by leading national anthems for both nations.
Thirty-two players are representing each country, with categories across Open and age group divisions for men and women.
Rafa Vega is captaining the GB men’s Open team of Nick Hatchett, George Weller andCameron Dollimore. Captain for the Men’s 40s category is Bero Bobus (with Gareth Schnehage, Lance Plunkett, Jon Southern). Ahmad Butt is leading the men’s 50s (with Will Wells, Jonathan Tredgett and Mark Hadley). Captain for the 60s category is Darren Boner playing with Neil Morgan, Sandy Case and Minter Dial.
in the women’s, Eloise Tait is captaining the ladies Open squad of Alice Keddie, Victoria Nicholas and Laura Jackson. Rachael Heath-Porsz is captaining the women’s 40s, playing with Tabitha Reid, Daisy Maclean and Claire Pollard. Audrey Henderson and Olivia Nichols captain the women’s 50s A and B teams of Pippa Britton (Vincent), Desni Mcintosh, Anneka Els, Anthea Hunt, Sally Bickerton and Carol North.
The Opening Ceremony starts proceedings at 9am tomorrow (Friday). Play starts at 10am with the awards ceremony scheduled for 7.30pm on Saturday evening.
“The moment has finally arrived for the next iteration of this famous transatlantic sporting rivalry,” said Bill Ullman, Joelle Quinn and Ben Nichols, co-founders of the cup. “This event is about more than competition, it’s about community, connection and the continuation of a sporting legacy that has existed between our two nations for 174 years. It is now padel’s time,” they added.
Padel’s massive growth in the UK is mirrored in the States, with court number there surging past 700, up from 300 last year, according to data compiled by Playtomic, cup’s co-title partner alongside Babolat.
Elite schedule
It’s a busy weekend of padel for GB’s elite players, with a number participating in the FIP Silver R3 Bullpadel Cup at Stratford, London, and the seniors contesting the FIP Senior Euro Padel Cup in Spain. The FIP website has details of draws for both events (and results so far for the Senior Euros), with its YouTube channel hosting live (and recorded) matches. 🎾
